Different Types of Pumps: Working and Their Applications

There are different types of pumps available in the market. This article will assist you to know the main functionalities of each type of pump. The type of pump, as well as selection, mainly depend on our requirement. The application mainly includes the type of fluid you desire to pumps, the distance you desire to move the fluid, and the quantity you require to get over a particular time frame. However, it is complicated to recognize accurately what kind of pump you must select. The identifying of the pump can be done with the design as well as positions. To make simpler things while seeking to choose your exact pump, and the pumps can be classified into two types which function in extremely dissimilar ways & generally summarize most of the pump designs.

Positive Displacement Pump

Dynamic Pump

1) Positive Displacement Pump

In these types of pumps, the moving parts (gears, lobes, plungers, pistons, and rotors) drain fluid from the pump housing and increase the hydraulic pressure at the same time. Therefore, a positive displacement pump does not build up pressure. It just generates fluid flow. It also doesn’t need manual priming because it has the self-priming capability.
The positive displacement pumps further divide into the multiple types. The classification of the positive displacement pumps is given below:

 Reciprocating Type

  • Plunger
  • Piston
  • Diaphragm
  • Circumferential Piston
Rotary Type
  • Gear Pump
  • Screw Pump
  • Rotary Vane
Pneumatic Type
  • Rope Pumps
  • Chain Pumps

2) Dynamic Pump

A dynamic pump transfers the fluid by increasing its pressure as it passes through the impeller and diffuser. In this type, the impeller increases the speed of the fluid and the diffuser converts this speed into pressure energy. It uses centrifugal force for the pumping of fluid.

A dynamic pump further divides into the below-given types:

  •  Centrifugal Pumps
  •  Vertical Centrifugal Pumps
  •  Horizontal Centrifugal Pumps
  •  Submersible Pumps
  •  Fire Hydrant Pumps
